Runners

Speed of Light will be an extraordinary moment in the history of running.

In August 2012, thousands of runners will have the chance of a lifetime – to run a choreographed route around Arthur’s Seat at night in specially commissioned light suits. The stunning results will be viewed by a ticketed audience as they ascend the summit of the hill every night as part of Edinburgh International Festival.

Distance runners from all across the country can take part. Runners should be fit enough to complete 3-5k – with some hill work – by summer 2012 and able to stay active for up to two and a half hours at night. There will be elements of running, jogging and walking within the choreography and training packages can be downloaded via the links below.

Each and every runner is essential to the creation of this event and if you have registered you are able to attend an orientation session and to commit to your chosen event night. You will need to be willing to run in all weathers as the performance will only be cancelled in extreme circumstances.

How do I register?
Additional spaces have just been released for runners! Click on the calendar to the left to be taken through to the booking system on our partner Jog Scotland’s website.

How do I train?
Training packs for Beginner (size: 10MB) and Intermediate (size: 9MB) runners (who have completed a 10k) are now available (right click to ‘Save as’). These packs have been written in conjunction with our partner Jogscotland and will help you ensure you are fully prepared for Speed of Light. It is essential that you are committed to training and to building up strength to remain injury free.

When is it?
Speed of Light will take place from Thu 9 August-Sat 1 September, 8pm-1.30am every night. Runners will take part in small groups and will be on the hill for 1.5 hours.

You’ll need to commit to a date when you register. Your precise start and finish time will depend on the group you are allocated to and this will be confirmed in June.

What do I get for my £10 registration fee?
Taking part will be a truly memorable experience running with a bespoke light suit on; it will be physically challenging; mentally stimulating and great fun! Runners will be provided with access to online training schedules, forums and discussion groups, t-shirt and goody bag. There will be no additional charges.
